Issues Aren’t Always a Bad Thing

I get it. The name makes you think that “issues” are always going to be a bad thing. They are the thorn in your side. The problems and challenges that get in the way of your business succeeding. You think that issues are something to be avoided at all costs. It might surprise you then that issues aren’t always a bad thing. In fact, sometimes they can actually be good.

Embracing Your Issues as Opportunities

In the Entrepreneurial Operating System, we define issues as any unresolved problem, idea, or opportunity. They aren’t just the bad things that happen. Issues are also all of the hopes, ideas, and dreams that you have for the future of your business.

As your business grows, it’s only natural that issues will pop up. You will face new challenges and obstacles to overcome. Every issue then should be embraced as a possible opportunity. They are the chance to get rid of the things holding your business back. A way to move your business closer to achieving your vision. The only issues that are actually a problem for you and your business, are the ones you leave unresolved.

Great Leaders are the ones who SOLVE issues

Bad leaders are the ones who ignore the issues that pop up. Ignoring issues only leads to more problems down the line and can have a negative impact on the entire organization. If you are not honest about your issues, it hinders your ability to grow, stopping the business from progressing.

Great leaders are the ones who are able to solve issues effectively. However, many great leadership teams still struggle at this. They set the meeting to discuss an issue, but soon enough the meeting gets derailed by side stories and repeated points. By the end, they realize that nothing ever actually got solved. They never truly got to the real root of the issue, never created an actionable plan or set accountability and the issue is still impacting the business.  This has never happened to you…right?

That is why EOS created the Issue Solving Tool – IDS, to help leaders get better at problem-solving and getting to the heart of solving their issues for good.

What do I mean by IDS? Quite simply, it’s:

Identify – First, you must clearly identify what the real root of the issue is. We’re not talking surface level. This is digging deep to get to the real deal and understanding the true cause of an issue.

Discuss – Once identified, you need to discuss the real root of the issue as a team while starting to identify possible, actionable solutions that could be taken to solve it.

Solve – Then you need to hold yourself and your team accountable for actually solving the issue. This isn’t the, “Oh, you have it covered, right?”. You need to set clear actions and assign a person accountable for implementing the solve.

Not every issue will be resolved right away. Finding the root cause can sometimes bring to light new, underlying issues that also need to be addressed. When other issues come up, make sure to capture those new issues as separate issues. They will also need to be prioritized and solved at the right time. Typically, EOS puts issues into two categories: short-term (meaning you want to work on solving it within the next 90 days) or long-term (meaning it can be dealt with next quarter).

Having issues isn’t a bad thing. The bad thing is not being honest with yourself and calling out that there are issues to begin with. A good team working together can solve anything. We just need to know about it first.
